Prescribed Burn

Update

02/24/2023

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will begin conducting spring season prescribed burns in areas along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in Virginia as early as next week. The A.T. may be temporarily closed in the area of the Old Hotel Trail and Cow Camp Gap Shelter (NOBO mile 812.9) for the 440-acre Cole Mountain prescribed burn in the coming weeks.

The A.T. will likely only be closed for several hours the day of the prescribed burn. Hikers should plan their itineraries accordingly and follow all posted signs and directions from USFS fire crews. Hikers approaching that section on the day of the burn should be prepared to wait for the Trail to reopen or find an alternative route.

There may be lingering smoke in the surrounding areas. For more information: https://www.fs.usda.gov/gwj/

The date of the prescribed burn is largely dependent on weather. We will update this notice when we have more information.
